Hiring too soon drains resources; hiring too late stalls growth. Welcome to the founder’s catch-22. The key is timing and clarity. Before you bring on that first employee (or the fifth), ask: Is this role tied directly to revenue, product development, or customer success? If not, hold off.
Early hires shape culture as much as they shape output. Choose people who thrive in chaos, wear multiple hats, and believe in the mission. Skills can be trained, but grit and flexibility? Those are priceless.
Don’t ignore alternatives—contractors, part-time experts, or fractional executives can fill gaps without long-term overhead. When you do hire, invest in onboarding. Even a small team needs structure to avoid burnout and misalignment. Growth isn’t about how many people you employ—it’s about having the right people at the right time.
